This is my finished texture map in Photoshop, I began messing around with the different effects on the layers to try different things which I think helped. And the image at the top is the finished model, and base with textures in UDK. It's no where near as good as it could be, but i'm pretty happy with the final result. It looks like an excavator so all is good.

These are some screen shots of how the vehicle started and finished in Maya in terms of texture. The bottom image is what the finished textures looked like on the model.

This an image of the decals that I used around the side of the vehicle, I did try to paint them on to the texture but it looked really bad, the hardest thing to try and recreate was the mesh texture, but on the model I think they look fine.

These are the texture maps I used for the base. I think the dirt and the ground texture look fine but i'd like to practice more with tileable textures like the brick work in order to make it look more believable.

Base UV's

These are the UV's for my diorama base, I got them all on to one texture map before realising we could use up to 4 512 textures. I think they're fine and the textures on the base i'm happy with. I think next time I have to split them up a little more in order to make the textures more detailed and just spend longer working on them.

This is a screenshot of the Gantt chart that I used for this module, with all the weeks and different parts on there.

Vehicle Screen shot

This is a screen shot of my vehicle with some of the basic textures on it, and also the alpha planes which i have since added to the vehicle. I'm still working on the textures but this is it so far. I'm trying to concentrate on the bits the player is more likely to focus on. I'm just happy to have it look like this instead of it being completely blank. I know that there is SO much still left to do on it but at least it's something.

Diorama Sketch

This is my initial sketch for the actual diorama, i didn't want a typical 'here's my vehicle in the middle of the street' type diorama, i wanted it to look like it was doing something, like the dioramas on Batman, sort of. This is also influenced by the models that i paint when i try to make a base for them to make it look more interesting. So more of a scene than a static....thing. Obviously it won't look exactly like this but something similar is what i'm aiming for.

Vehicle UVs

The image at the top shows the UV's from my vehicle, all unwrapped and ready to texture. The image underneath shows the basic colour blockout for the most important parts, the bits that will be at the players eye sight. The size of my vehicle means that when the textures are put on the model they're all very low resolution so many of the textures have been painted on. However, even the painted textures are still quite low resolution. This part isn't so bad but the UVs just don't stop, when i think i've done a block out for everything, i find more. Originally i had a texture on my track but got told it looked pretty bad i hand drew the textures which i like much more now.

Basic Blockout

This is the rather crude drawing from the side of my vehicle, i did do one from the front and the other side but i can't find the images anywhere. I used this to get the initial block out of the vehicle done, and then i went back to my photos in order to get some of the other details.

Will have to redo the first task as i needed to delete the images taken in order to take more pictures of the Construction vehicle. I will do it again, i just thought the vehicle took priority.

Blocking MA DIGGER!

Here I've started to choose which bits I will will model separately. I may split it up a little more, and merge some bits together. I think I will make the back section all as one thing and split the arm into two sections.

MORE OF MA DIGGER!

The vehicle was hard to get decent images of as round the back was a pile of steel rods, and on the other side was a crater so all the images from that side will be at an angle, as will the ones from behind. Jake asked Nick to stand next to it as size reference so I took a picture of it as well as it will be helpful when looking at how big certain things are. The more I look at it the more I see different shapes, which will make it much easier to model if I can do it in sections. Much of the main body can be flat panels with detailed textures so many of the polys used will be on the treads and the arm.

MA DIGGER!

So, for the assignment this semester we have to create a construction vehicle from all our own references for both look and texture. It was a pain in the arse because very few places are happy with uni students walking around a building site for all kinds of health and safety reasons. These pictures aren't great but with the quality of my camera it's a miracle they don't look like cave drawings, they're the best I could get with the camera I have. This was never going to be an easy task anyway but i'm confident to model this, i'm not great at modelling anyway, art being my strong point so, again, it'll be the best i can do. We looked around Derby and found this where the old court house was, the trips we'd tried to organise didn't work out.
